Self healing ability supported by ‘Autacoid Medicine’: the case of PEA

Chairman of the Dutch IOCOB foundation discussed the fundamentals of the self healing ability of our body in his article about autacoid medicine in the medical journal Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Management. Earlier this year he already described several principles elsewhere. [1]

The article also mentions a few examples of people that were treated with the natural substance palmitoylethanolamide (PEA). One patient responded better to PEA capsules with vitamin B (PeaPlex) than pure PEA capsules, an interesting example of the synergy between substances in the body. Other synergies between PEA explored in the clinic are PEA together with resveratrol, and PEA together with luteolin.

The start of autacoid medicine

In 1986 a speech was given in Washington by a well-known professor that was doing a lot of research on the receptors in the brain. Specifically those receptors responsible for the creation of fear and pain. The PEA innovators of the company Epitech translated this lecture in Italian, it is sadly enough not available in English.

Professor Erminio Costa indicated during his speech that when looking for new cures it is very important to follow the path of healing that nature has created in our bodies in her millions of years of development. He explained that our body contains many healing mechanisms that can be activated by giving them specific substances. It goes without saying that when you activate one of these self-healing mechanisms, it creates a lot less side effects than when taking a pharmaceutical substance. After all, classical pharmaceutical substances are foreign to the body.

Molecules that are foreign to the body have to be broken down. The body possesses an extensive mechanism to break down natural molecules, but pharmaceutical molecules are foreign to the body and are not always recognized by the enzymes in our body that break down substances.

The message of Professor Costa didn’t get heard around the world, only partly in Italy, where the companies LifeGroup and the successor company Epitech worked on PEA. This is due to the fact that the speech was only translated in to Italian, as said, and not into English. However, the principle that Professor Costa discussed here can turn in to a new leading principle in medicine.

In the last few years there have been a number of professors that developed the principle that professor Costa explained during his speech. You could call this principle ‘starting a physiological incline’ or activating and supporting the self-healing ability of the body.

This type of medicine is known in a small circle as ‘autacoid medicine’, partly due to the articles by Keppel Hesselink. An autacoid is a self-healing molecule, ‘auto’ stands for self and ‘coid’ stands for healing.

A number of molecules have become known since the 90’s that increase and support self-healing abilities in our body. Knowledge around these molecules is part of autacoid medicine.

It’s about time that more knowledge from autacoid medicine starts being used!
