Back pain in dogs and palmitoylethanolamide

backpain in dogs and PeaPureBack pain is common in both dogs and humans, and a new treatment without side effects based on the all natural painkiller palmitoylethanolamide (PeaPure or een PEA-houdend product) is now available. PeaPure is available via a webshop in Europe and produced in the Netherlands according to GMP; een PEA-houdend product is available in Spain and Italy, and available in pharmacies.

Back pain is often associated with intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration. authors Bergknut, N. wrote a PhD thesis on this topic, publihed in Acta Universitatis Agriculturae Sueciae, Volume: 2010, Issue: 91 (2011), from which we quote parts of the summary.

The aim of this thesis was to increase the knowledge of IVD degeneration in dogs and to evaluate the similarities and differences between IVD degeneration in dogs and humans. Some of the findings were:

• IVD degenerative diseases were most common in chondrodystrophic (CD) dogs, especially in Dachshunds, and were 1.5 times more common in male than female dogs.

Case fatality rates were found to be higher than previously suggested, with rates of 34% in the overall population, around 20% in most CD breeds, and over 50% in the Non-CD breeds at highest risk such as the Doberman and the German Shepherd Dog.

• Many similarities were found between the processes of IVD degeneration in humans and CD and NCD dog breeds.

As human patients can be easily treated with palmitoylethanolamide, and we already tested this treatment in boxers and golden retrievers, the supplement palmitoylethanolamide seems a good alternative to treat back pain in pet dogs.

Palmitoylethanolamide can best be applied as PeaPure capsules, containing pure PEA easy to sprinkle over dogfood.
